Overview
The Shiatsu Clinic & School offers ongoing educational opportunities for the public, for individuals preparing for a career in bodywork, and for bodywork professionals seeking continuing education. Graduates of the School's state approved training program become Licensed Massage Therapists in Iowa, nationally certified in Massage Therapy and Bodywork, and Oriental Bodywork Therapists. Flexible scheduling, a modular curriculum, small classes, extensive clinical experience, and an emphasis on student success are key features of the School. The School's ongoing natural health seminars are open to both professionals and the public.

Student Handbook
The first thing that must be addressed in regard to massage schools is
that while the public's interest in massage is at an all time high, the
success rate of most massage school's graduates is abysmally low, after
three years 80-87% are out of the business.
By contrast the graduates of the Shiatsu Clinic& School, which has been
in operation for over 16 years, succeed at a rate of over 90%.
This is accomplished by a dedication to key goals of the school:
1. The training of Massage Therapists / Asiatic Bodywork Therapists as
Medical Professionals capable of successfully treating acute or chronic
conditions.
2. Students practicing all aspects of running successful clinics whether
they are in- home clinics, working for health clubs, spas etc. or working
with complementary health professionals such as Chiropractors while they
are in school so the transition to professional life is minimal.
3. Having a faculty with experience in education and research as well as
practical experience in being a success as a therapist.
4. A combination of individual instruction and small class size to
guarantee every student gets the attention needed to succeed.
Our Campus is located at 1025 N. Summit Street, which is a 5000 sq. ft. facility with 5
clinic classrooms, an 800 sq. ft. large classroom/video studio, workout
rehab gym, hydro-therapy suite including 2 saunas and jacuzzi.
Class Schedule
Mondays 9-12:30 and 1-5:30 at The Shiatsu Clinic & School.
Clinic hours are schedule Tuesday through Thursday, 8am - 7pm.
Flexible scheduling:
Our program is a year round schedule in month long modules. Normal length
of completion is one year, minimum possible is 6 months, and maximum is
18 months. This makes it possible for students to hold other jobs and/or
take care of families while attending school.
Students in the 800 hr licensure program must schedule at least 7 hrs/wk and may schedule up to 45 hrs/wk between classroom lecture and clinic hours. Students schedule in 2 sections:
A. The basic Focused Touch Shiatsu & Swedish form, Mondays & Fridays only
(8-10 weeks)
B. The remainder of the program including individual instruction M-F
Students may take the test and complete the module at anytime they are ready and then move on to the next modules. This is what allows students to complete the program in less than a year.
Remember- students are required to show up on time (which is 10 min before class), read assigned readings before class, and try, the School guarantees everything else, our motto is “Everyone gets it”.
Students may start the program at the beginning of any module and must complete all modules to graduate. It is not order of the modules that is important, it is the mastery and application that is all important.
The maximum number of students in the School at any one time is 12, most classes are 6 or less and tues-thurs are individual instruction days.
Students in the 250 hr Focused Touch Shiatsu program schedule only Tues-Thurs in 4 hr blocks of individual instruction. Outside reading is
extensive; this is a non-licensure program for advanced technique and
certification in the AOBTA (800 hr students receive this as part of their
regular program).
Stage II FTS training is a 200 hr program for those with previous Shiatsu
training, it also schedules in 4 hr blocks tues-thurs for individual
instruction. When the School is full students are placed on a waiting list on a first
come first served basis.

Financing
Most schools list only tuition and possibly books as a cost to the
student. This is because most schools sell necessary equipment to the
student at retail. This causes a business problem for the student almost
immediately because most students borrow the money to finance their
education and lenders are loathe to loan a new business owner more money
before he/she repays the first loan. By the time the student figures out
they need the same equipment as others in their chosen profession they
have been put in this awkward and unnecessary position by the school they
are attending to learn good business practices.
We at SCS believe the student should learn good business practices from
the very beginning and from a good example set by their own school so we
include all necessary equipment and books with the tuition @ WHOLESALE
saving the student an average of 25% off the cost of the same equipment
retail.
The cost for everything the student needs to start their own business
except the room to practice in is $7600.

Our financing options are:
1 payment of $7200-a $400 discount
4 payments the beginning of the first 4 months of the program of $1900 @ 0% interest
Financing through TFC Corp. of 36 monthly payments @ 12% interest. Payment size depends on down payment, minimum down payment is only $400.
Students receive their equipment after $2000 is paid so an example is:
$2000 down payment (student immediately receives all equipment)
36 payments of $185/mo. This allows the student to begin their
professional business financing life immediately in a professional
manner. Any other down payment from $400 is possible, a chart of payments
will be immediately provided to the student and they will receive their
equipment in the colors of their choice when $2000 is reached.
Work-Study Policy
The School has many employer contacts in the Iowa City area and will assist those students in finding employment that request it.
Scholarships are need based and at the sole discretion of the School.
Foreign Foundations
We have non-profit foundations in Venezuela and Romania actuating our
belief that the whole world needs cheap effective health care. Students
interested in traveling and assisting in these foundations should consult
with the Directors about details.
